Our Story

The Story Behind Skullette

How a wall of dark paintings became bags carried out loud.

Chapter one · The feeling

Some of us never grew out of the dark.

At some point the world decides you should carry something sensible. Something beige. You still love the ivory skulls and the blood red roses, the candlelight paintings, the old estate silver. You just stop being offered any of it, and you learn to keep the dark at home like a secret.

We think that is a small tragedy. Skullette exists to fix it.

Chapter two · One painting

It started with a painting no one saw.

Julie Marsh, founder of Skullette, at her worktable
Julie Marsh · Founder

Our founder, Julie Marsh, painted skulls and roses the way the old masters painted saints: in shadow, in deep color, in gold. The paintings hung in one quiet room, seen by almost no one.

So she put one on a bag. Not as a product. Just as a way to take the painting with her when she left the house.

Then strangers started stopping her. In line at the pharmacy, at her niece's recital, in the church parking lot of all places. Not because it was a bag. Because it was that painting.

“I could never leave the dark at home,” she says. “It turned out nobody else could either. We recognize each other.”

· from one painting, made for no one but herself ·

Chapter three · The idea

A gallery you can carry.

A gallery hangs a painting on a wall and asks you to leave it there. We give the painting a body instead: structured leather, hardware that feels like it was found in an old estate, the artwork wrapped edge to edge so there is no front side and no plain side.

So we do not think of a new design as a product launch. We think of it as a painting leaving the wall. See how each bag is made →

Chapter four · The carriers

Today the bags do the talking.

1,960 customers have reviewed us, averaging 4.60 stars, and they keep telling us the same story in different words. One named her wallet Morticia: dark, feminine, and mysterious. Another wrote that everywhere she goes, people stare at her and then at her bag. Her advice: stare on.

A bag like this does not whisper. It introduces you.

That was true of the very first painting, and it is the standard every new design has to meet. Read their reviews →

Chapter five · Your turn

The dark suits you.

We keep 322 pieces across eight shapes and seven styles: skulls and roses, engraved bone on black, moons and midnight cats, and the rest of the family. If you have ever loved a thing the world called too much, it is probably already here.

Welcome to Skullette. Carried out loud.
